Originating from the U.S., Small Business Saturday was began by American Express in 2010. The ‘Shop Small’ holiday made it’s way to the UK in 2013 and has been getting bigger and bigger each year. Last year’s Small Business Saturday UK was a huge success with customers spending £623 million, that’s 24% more than in 2014! So, how can you take advantage of the additional footfall of shoppers looking to shop small? We’ve got you covered with these 3 simple tips to make the most of Small Business Saturday UK 2016. It’s not too late to get involved!

1. Make the Most of Small Business Saturday’s Free Marketing Materials

Small Business Saturday UK provides plenty of free marketing materials that you can use to promote your participation. Get your hands on downloadable logos to put on your website and use on social media. Small Business Saturday is becoming a recognisable brand so use their logos to grab attention online.

Similarly, you can download or send off for a marketing pack which includes stickers and posters for you to put up in your brick-and-mortar store. Make your store stand out as Small Business Saturday shoppers are more likely to enter your store if it’s clear you’re participating.

2. Shout on Social Media

Last year, the official hashtag (#SmallBizSatUK) trended on Twitter all day and over 100,000 tweets were sent. So, there’s a massive opportunity for independent retailers to use social media to their advantage on Small Business Saturday. Whether you’re participating online or in store, make sure you shout about your participation across all social media channels in the days leading up to the big event.

Why not live tweet from your store on the day with pictures and videos of your Small Business Saturday activities? It may entice those in the local area to come and join you! Or go one step further by encouraging shoppers on the day to share on their own social media. Ask them to share their purchases or tweet a picture of your displays… It may attract the attention of their friends!

3. Put on a special offer or celebration

We all know that offering deals or discounts is more likely to entice shoppers to spend their money so go above and beyond by offering something special for shoppers supporting independent retailers. If you’ve put on deals for the crazy discount days, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, why not extend your offers and repeat them for Small Business Saturday?

There’s plenty of ways you can attract more shoppers including a free giveaway when you spend over a certain amount to encourage people to spend more, running a competition in store, or giving out money off vouchers with every purchase to encourage first-time customers to return again.
